Jan Opsomer

Position

Professor for Ancient Philosophy, K.U.Leuven

Profile

Jan Opsomer currently has a project on late ancient philosophy of nature, especially the debates on geometric atomism (Alexander of Aphrodisias, Proclus, Simplicius), and the theory of motion (Proclus, Elements of Physics). Another focus are methodological questions in the philosophy of nature (use and transfer of explanatory principles; applicability of mathematics to physics and metaphysics). In addition to that Jan Opsomer works on the history of Platonism, in particular Middle Platonism (Plutarch) and Neo-Platonism, but also Hellenistic Platonism (debates with other schools).
