Maria Liatsi is Professor of Classics at the University of Ioannina (Greece).
Abstract: In Ancient Literature can be found a lot of examples of desires, whose lack of ability to be fulfilled cause extreme and deep pain. What are the reasons that set a limit, explicitly or implicitly, for the freedom of people to realize their desires, that is, what are the real reasons that provoke such intense pain? One might ascertain that it is the human nature itself that renders the fulfillment of all longings impossible, causing, in this way, inevitably pain. The meaning of this insight is twofold, it lies on two different levels. It remains to examine which they are.
This guest lecture is organized by Women in Ancient Philosophy and sponsored by the Research Training Group Philosophy, Science and the Sciences at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Our goal is to provide young and highly talented female philosophers with the opportunity to present their work and interact with each other.
