This is an international conference to take place within the framework of the Reserach Training Group Philosophy, Science and the Sciences. The conference will focus on explanations in Galen's physics, biology and physiology, including embryology and pharmacology. We aim to explore in particular the way in which terms and conceptions from the philosophical tradition are employed or transformed by Galen in his physical, physiological and biological explanations. The suggested focus on 'natural philosophy' is thus designed to take forward our understanding of Galen's accounts of the natural world and the human body (leaving aside for present purposes the rather more fully studied area of soul theory/psychology and the broader ones of logic and epistemology).
