Martha Nussbaum  is the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics, appointed in the Law School and Philosophy Department at the University of Chicago.

In this workshop we’ll have the opportunity to read and discuss two chapters that are part of Martha Nussbaum’s forthcoming book “The Monarchy of Fear – A Philosopher Looks at Our Political Crisis” in which Nussbaum examines the ways in which fear undermines democracies. The first chapter is on the chronological and causal primacy of fear, the second on sexism and misogyny.

Students and staff from all fields, universities and of all levels are welcome but need to sign up for the workshop in advance. If you like to take part, please write an email to Ronja Hildebrandt (Hildebrr@student.hu-berlin.de) until February 20th. The workshop is PRE-READ: all participants are expected to read the manuscript in advance.

Women in Ancient Philosophy is an initiative of female doctoral students associated to the Research Training Group "Philosophy, Science and the Sciences". The initiative organizes conferences, workshops and guest lectures aiming to foster networking and equal opportunities for young female researchers.
