Dissertaton: The Orthos Logos in Aristotle’s Ethics
Aristotle determines that the purpose of his Ethics is not to know, but to act well and be good; and he tells us that moral actions should follow the orthos logos. The role of the orthos logos seems to be very important for Aristotle in his ethics, and he promises us that he will discuss what the orthos logos is and how it is related to other virtues. After he has discussed the ethical virtue, in the opening passage of book VI he returns to the question what the orthos logos is. But he seems to tell us that we should continue to discuss the virtues of thought before we answer what the orthos logos is. So he devotes himself in EN VI to discussing the virtues of thought, while the problem of the orthos logos still remains obscure. My project is t to classify and determine what sort of entity the orthos logos is, weighing the evidence for and against regarding it as a kind of faculty, a virtue, a universal principle, or a particular prescription.

I was born in 1982 in south China. In 2005 I received my bachelor degree at the Shandong University with the thesis “on Spinoza’s conception of happiness”; and then moved to Peking university to study ancient philosophy. In the summer of 2009 I finished my master thesis with the title “Aristotle’s Ergon Argument”, and attained my master degree. Since then, I have been studying at the Graduate School of Ancient Philosophy at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
I earned my doctorate at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin with the dissertation thesis „The Orthos Logos in Aristotle’s Ethics“.
In September 2014 I returned to China to take a post-doc position at the Shandong University.
